So I used to be a member of this rp board called Gotham Nights, and I redid the Dinah avatar I had there because the one they found sucked. After I did that, I ended up with a request board because most of the people there adored what I did. Here's some of the best ones I did, all of them from bases, and only a couple that can technically be considered "recolors." Onomatopoeia, Dinah, formal Dinah, Circe Deadshot, Mercy Graves, Huntress, Lois Lane (Superman Returns outfit) Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern Kyle, Vixen

I should show you the original of Kyle that they had (I was playing Lois, Dinah, Kyle, Question, and Onomatopoeia). It was terrible. The original of Dinah I'm pretty sure was supposed to be her mother, not her. And some of the others they had no icon for at all! I was always proudest of my Huntress one. It looked totally official and no one believed I'd made it by hand. <3 <--- Original Kyle/GL. <--- This was the original of Dinah, with some minor mods to the hair I'd done. I don't have the original original anymore, but it had the hair swept back.

Oh, wow XD Kyle doesn't look happy and his hands look like they should be white-knuckled from gripping hard iron bars. And poor Dinah D8 Her face isn't . . . like her's . . . at all XD

Evolution of an icon: Max Mercury So I was pulled onto the same board... by the same person that pulled me over here. Hmm... starting to see a pattern developing. Having a penchant for playing obscure characters, I settled on Max Mercury. Of course, the problem with obscure characters is finding images of them, especially when you don't have any of their books. The intarwebs being what they are, I managed to find a good pic... That I couldn't use due to the rules of that board. (They wanted a 'look', and had settled on Bruce Timm-styled images.) So yeah. Now I have my image and can't use it, because Bruce Timm never drew Max Mercury. In discussing this with the Chibi, I also mentioned somewhere that I'd like to 'update' the look of the character a bit and lose that collar. That led me to a half-hour session with my old friend the Hero Machine www.ugo.com/channels/comics/heroMachine2/Not bad, if I do say so myself, and I do! When you can't draw for spit, and you hate to bug people who can, Hero Machine lets you produce a pretty decent image, and you don't have to be a computer programmer to run it. (Being free also helps, though you'll need to use a screen-capture program to save your image when using the online free version.) I showed that to Chibi... and got this a short time later. Voila! I can probably still make them, but these are /crazy/ hard to find now. The place I got the original bases from has been gone for a while. Though I may still have a couple of the bases on my laptop or old PC. They take so long to make, though.

That's why I put up the Hero Machine link. I remember how long it took for you to do that one of Max, and I also remember how everyone and their dog kept bugging you for icons... to the point that you didn't get anything else done. If you're doing an OC.. which in this case can stand for 'obscure character' as much as for 'original character', Hero Machine will give you a good image that you don't have to bug the daylights out of your artist friends to have. And if you're in one of the Machines with a limited color palette, build the figure as a line drawing then run it through MS Paint. Evolution of an Icon 2: Golden Arrow Golden Arrow is a Golden Age character that I played on that same board. Talk about obscure. At the time, I could only find ONE picture of him. So, since Chibi was going to be nice enough (being the really nice person she ie) to Timmify him, she needed something to go by... Back to the Hero Machine, plus another old friend of mine MS Paiint to get the right colors... Now, to meet the 'rules' of that board.... And again, voila, Golden Arrow a la Bruce Timm courtesy of Chibi The upshot here is, folks, that while it may look 'cool' to have all the character icons look the same, (and certainly no knock against the art of Bruce Timm), (and no knock against the art of the Chibi either XD ) I for one find it much more interesting to see the characters as they appear in their own books, and not shoehorned into one set appearance. I really think you lose a lot of the individual characteristics of the characters that way. My $0.02 USD on the subject.
